African Dance

Hi my lovely dancers!

Today I'm going to tell you about a dance that I personally love to dance: African dance! This dance accompanies the happy or unhappy moments of life. Exuberant, energetic, it is practiced barefoot to the rhythm of the djembe, a percussion instrument.

Inspired by folk dances

The African dance classes are inspired by the traditional dances of Cameroon, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Senegal... That is to say the diversity and richness of this dance! Very energetic, the African dance demands the whole body and requires a great mobility of the hips and the bust. Relaxed pelvis and back (spine), legs spread apart, feet well anchored in the ground, chest (sternum) open to the sky: these are the essential bases to enter this dance.

A dance that feels good

Practicing African dance is very playful and invigorating. You let yourself be carried away by the rhythm of the percussions and you come out of it exhausted but happy! The movements allow you to acquire great flexibility, strengthen your joints and develop your breath. Perhaps you would like this mode of expression that will allow you to let off steam and give free rein to your movements? If you have the opportunity to attend a class, you'll be able to see the overwhelming vitality of the dancers! Sometimes, at the end of the class, the teacher will define a circle and everyone will take turns improvising in the middle.

Basic movements

  • The dooplé: one of the first ones you will learn in African dance. Standing, knees bent, thighs slightly apart, feet parallel and firmly anchored in the ground, bust stretched forward.
  • The soumplé: almost identical to the dooplé. Only difference: legs and feet are joined.
  • The Tchinkoui: Standing, knees bent, feet parallel, weight of the body on the right leg, right hip out.
  • The Kagnioulé: Same as the Souplé with one foot placed in half-point. Body weight on one leg only.

  5. Hola !
